Background

An experienced Art Registrar is required to assist with the ongoing management of the art collection of a principal based in London. The collection primarily comprises of a significant number of 20th century paintings but also includes some watercolours, drawings, sculptures, furniture, jewellery, silverware, glass pieces, china, rare documents, books and guns. The collection is spread across four residences, two offices and, in the near future, a boat. The curator of the collection is based abroad and the newly created Art Registrar role will have a dual reporting line to the curator and to the principle’s chief of staff.

 

Main responsibilities

The Art Registrar, working closely with the curator, will have responsibility for the principle’s art collection and other chattels; ensuring that the collection is stored and cared for properly and that all handling, transportation, installation and maintenance is conducted appropriately. The Art Registrar will be London-based but will be required to undertake some travel, mostly to Gloucestershire and to the changeable location of the boat.

- Upgrade and maintain the computer and paper records for all pieces within the collection, including accession, condition and location of all objects

- Coordinate and oversee packing and shipping of all pieces when transported or acquired

- Coordinate and oversee installation of all new pieces

- Ensure maintenance of an inventory list for insurance purposes and advise on the suitability of the insurance arrangements

- Assist with the intermittent outward loan programme including packing, transportation, shipment scheduling and documentation

- Design and implement a maintenance programme for the collection

- Train and supervise housekeepers and crew in regards to the correct daily care of the collection

- Support the acquisition of new pieces, including on occasion, attending and bidding at auctions, arranging payments and arranging shipping documentation

 

Person specification:

- An appropriate tertiary qualification in Museum Studies or Collection Management, or an equivalent qualification

- Proven experience in collections management and cataloguing

- Proven experience of art handling and storage

- Knowledge of best practice in art handling and collection management including international principles, practices and standards relating to documentation, management, transport, handling, display and maintenance of culturally significant objects

- Knowledge of and a professional network of museum, shipping, conservation and framing professionals

- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to provide clear and concise reports on collections and individual pieces

- Experience of photography and digital imaging would be desirable as would knowledge of visual and social history

 

Salary £45,000 to £50,000 gross per annum
