Live-in Housekeeper / Butler Couple Job in Newbury

A private household near Newbury is seeking an experienced, flexible and hands-on live-in housekeeper / butler couple for a weekend residence used by a family with four children who live out of home and one child who is at boarding school.

The successful couple will work alongside two housekeepers and another butler, reporting to the House Manager. This is a semi-formal household with a relaxed working environment, and other members of staff also live on the estate.

The roles will suit a self-motivated couple with excellent attention to detail and high standards across housekeeping, laundry, guest service, table service, driving and practical household support. Flexibility is essential when the family is in residence, particularly during weekends, shoot lunches and private events.

Duties and Responsibilities

Housekeeper:

  • Housekeeping and Laundry along with the team
  • Maintaining high standards of cleanliness and presentation throughout the main house and guest accommodation
  • Undertaking general cleaning, washing, ironing and laundry care
  • Working collaboratively with the existing housekeeping team
  • Taking a proactive approach and using initiative to ensure the household runs smoothly

Butler and Chauffeur:

  • Meeting and greeting family members and guests
  • Providing table service and assisting with entertaining
  • Supporting the housekeepers and wider household team as required
  • Responding promptly and discreetly to the principals’ needs
  • Assisting during shoot lunches and private events; external caterers will be engaged for larger occasions
  • Driving and Practical Duties
  • Chauffeuring the principals and family as required
  • Cleaning and maintaining the household vehicles
  • Providing practical, hands-on support throughout the property

Both

  • Occasionally travelling with the family, by prior arrangement
  • Cooking Support is a bonus
  • Preparing simple family meals would be an advantage

Candidate Requirements

  • Previous experience as a live-in domestic couple, within a private household is essential 
  • High housekeeping standards and excellent attention to detail
  • Professional, discreet, organised and self-motivated
  • Warm and confident when welcoming and assisting guests
  • Hands-on, adaptable and willing to support colleagues across both roles
  • Flexible regarding working hours when the family is in residence
  • Confident drivers; both candidates should hold valid driving licences
  • Simple family cooking skills would be an advantage

Property: The main house has seven bedrooms, with additional outbuildings providing guest accommodation.

Working Days: Five days per week. The usual schedule will cover the family’s weekend residence, with days off arranged according to occupancy. When the family is not in residence, the schedule will move to Monday to Friday.

Working Hours: Usual working hours are 7.00 am to 4.00 pm or 11am to 9.00 pm, shared with the other Butler and Housekeeper. Longer hours may be required when the family is in residence, with time off in lieu provided during quieter periods. Flexibility is essential.

Start: As soon as the right couple is found

Accommodation: Either a split-level flat or a separate two-bedroom cottage. Both options are independent of the main house and have small private gardens.
