Couple Job near Truro

Working for a family of four with two teenage children (a 16 year old son and 13 year old daughter), in a rural location about four miles from Truro. The home comprises a six bedroom main house, four self-contained cottages (one holiday let and three long term residential lets), several barns, stable blocks and approximately 35 acres of gardens, woodland and pasture. We have a dog, a cat and three horses. We are looking for an energetic, dedicated, professional and discreet couple who can quietly fit into our family life.

The role is divided into Maintenance/Gardener/Groundsperson and Housekeeper. The Housekeeper has sole responsibility for the upkeep of the house and all associated tasks. The Maintenance/Gardener/Groundsperson will have sole responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of the house, buildings, and wider grounds, while also working alongside the Head Gardener (who has overall responsibility for the garden with support from a junior gardener).

Both candidates must have a professional and friendly approach, be proactive, have strong attention to detail, be flexible and willing to step up as required when new tasks come up. Previous experience in the tasks involved in the role is required. They must be comfortable around dogs, cats and horses (one partner must have previous equestrian care experience). Fluent English is essential.

The clients work from home much of the time, and we regularly host business meetings or have visitors staying, so candidates must be sensitive to this and feel comfortable working quietly within a busy family environment.

The main duties of the roles include, but are not limited to:

Housekeeping duties:

  • Maintaining cleanliness of the house to a high standard: general cleaning, vacuuming, dusting and polishing, including care of antiques and delicate fabrics.

  • Laundry and ironing, making and changing beds.

  • Keeping the house tidy, organised and well presented.

  • Maintaining inventory of cleaning products.

  • Occasional simple meal preparation and clearing up, including preparation of home-grown vegetables harvested by gardener.

  • Occasionally running errands into Truro and surrounding area.

  • Overseeing and quality controlling the cleaning of on-site holiday cottage (agency cleaners are already in place for changeover cleaning), providing welcome milk and flowers to guests on arrival.

  • Scheduling deep cleaning of main house when family is away.

  • Assisting with deep cleaning of holiday cottage out of season.

  • Walking and daytime care of family dog on occasion.

  • Holiday care of dog (stays with couple when family is away).

Maintenance/Gardener/Grounds duties:

  • General maintenance and handywork throughout house, outbuildings, let properties and grounds.

  • General maintenance and handywork in holiday cottage, including preparing hot tub for each stay and addressing any issues arising during guests’ stay.

  • Assisting full-time Head Gardener in upkeep of the garden and grounds (eg. mowing, strimming, pruning, weeding, hedge trimming, planting, log splitting, etc). Chainsaw licence beneficial but not essential.

  • Managing maintenance schedule for family house - liaising with and supervising maintenance contractors as required, keeping a log of work done by contractors.

  • Minor electrical, plumbing, painting/decorating work.

  • Maintaining machinery and equipment.

  • Swimming pool and hot tub maintenance.

  • Cleaning cars and horsebox.

  • Maintaining private water supply.

  • Keeping area around the house tidy and well presented (sweeping and periodic jet washing of paved areas, cleaning windows, raking drive, etc).

  • Helping care for three horses: skipping out paddocks, mucking out stables, assisting with bringing in/turning out as required and when family is on holiday. Possible opportunity for occasional horse riding (subject to ability and weight, not part of working duties).

  • Occasional driving duties (in principles’ car), such as the school run, transport to/from social events, airport transfers.

  • Overseeing the security of house and grounds, point of contact for alarm company when family are away.

We will only consider candidates who have done a similar role before.

Hours: Monday to Friday 8am-5pm

Maintenance/Groundskeeper/Gardener role (40 hours)

Housekeeper role: 9am-4pm (30 hours) for the Housekeeper role, with a one-hour break.

Different working hours and weekend working may be required at times, and up to five working hours per week may additionally be required occasionally for each role; any hours worked above that will be given as time off in lieu. 20 days paid holiday plus 8 bank holidays per year.

Accommodation: A self-contained, two-bedroom cottage with an enclosed private garden approximately 200m from the main house is provided, with council tax included. A vehicle is available for work related errands, but due to the rural location the couple will require their own vehicle for personal use. The role is only suitable for a couple with no live-in dependents. Non-smokers only. Pets will be considered.
