Responsible to: Chair


Liaison with: Principal Rabbi, Cantor and other members of the Clergy team, Director of Education, Director of Programming, Office staff, Caretaker, Council members


Hours: Full time


Job Purpose: To provide operational leadership and effective management of FRS staff, finances and facilities

As part of the Senior Professional Team, ensure the delivery of the strategic objectives of FRS, ensuring all decisions of Council are implemented

Regularly review the synagogue’s activities and facilities, and recommend and implement improvements

In all aspects of the role, ensure strong relationships are developed with synagogue members and other professionals


Salary range: £40,000 – £45,000 depending on skills and experience




1. Leadership & Management

  • Make an active leadership contribution to the Senior Professional Team and across the FRS community

  • Manage, motivate and develop the staff team, creating an environment where all staff can develop and perform well

  • Plan and manage changes in accordance with the FRS strategic plan

  • Foster positive relationships with members, lay leadership and professional staff

  • Manage the administration function ensuring systems are appropriate and deliver outcomes based on FRS’s aims and goals

  • Ensure all necessary policies are created and updated in accordance with an agreed timetable, and adhered to


2. Community Development

  • In conjunction with the Principal Rabbi and other colleagues, be proactive in the creation and implementation of the synagogue’s development plans, advising Council on policy, resources and organisational structure in line with agreed strategic plan

  • Execute the agreed strategy, enlisting support for FRS’s vision across the community

  • Be the lead professional to engage with members and wherever possible meet with new and prospective members to introduce them to the community



3. Religious Services & Events Management

  • Have oversight of all services and synagogue events, delegating the detailed management to the Director of Programming


4. Financial Management

  • Assist the Treasurer in preparing an annual budget and strategic financial plan

  • Use the agreed budget to actively monitor and control financial resources

  • Within the scheme of delegation, approve relevant purchase orders and invoices

  • Proactively identify future activities or events which may have financial implications and raise this with SLT and lay leadership as appropriate


5. Facilities Management

  • Manage the appropriate maintenance, caretaking and cleaning of the FRS buildings including the purchase and repair of all furniture and fittings

  • Ensure the continuing availability of utilities, site services and equipment, and security, monitoring and reviewing contractual obligations for outsourced services

  • Manage any letting of premises to external organisations

  • Work with lay leaders on any planning and building processes and work with other professionals to manage any transitional relocation arrangements


6. Management Information Systems & ICT

  • Ensure IT resources are appropriate and maintained in order to support the community’s strategic plans, managing any third party support, and making any recommendations for improvements

  • Ensure all staff are trained to effectively use the systems and software

  • Ensure contingency plans are in place in the case of technology failure


7. Personnel Management

  • Ensure that all recruitment, appraisal, staff development, grievance, safeguarding, disciplinary and redundancy policies and procedures comply with legal and regulatory requirements and are communicated to all staff

  • Manage recruitment, contracts, performance appraisal, holiday administration, training and development for all support staff, ensuring all personnel records are kept up to date.

  • Seek and make use of specialist expertise in relation to HR issues, as needed
