Resident Matron Job in Hertfordshire, Starting September 2018


A reputable Independent school that offers education for boys and girls in Pre-Prep (4-7) and to boys only in Day and Boarding Preparatory School (7-13) is currently recruiting for a Resident Matron to join us from the start of the Autumn Term 2018. The successful candidate will join a team headed by the Housemaster and his family, Head Matron and a Resident Matron to help look after approximately 40-50 children within the boarding house. Accommodation is provided in a private, self-contained one-bedroom flat within the boarding house and all meals are included during term time.


Main responsibilities/duties


  • To work closely with the Head Matron, Housemaster and liaise with other members of the team

  • To attend to the general daily care of the children’s’ uniform and household linen, including sending and receiving items to and from the laundry

  • To attend to the issuing, resizing, repairing and the relabelling of school uniform

  • To assist at meal times to ensure sensible eating and sociable behaviour

  • To be on overnight call – two nights a week

  • To ensure that you are punctual when beginning duties and that you give a thorough handover when going off duty.

  • When on duty, that you ensure that you publicise your location on the matrons’ whiteboard so that all the children know where to find you

  • To be part of the staff day duty rota as issued by the Senior Master

  • To ensure that you are familiar with the essential school policy documents especially those relating to boarding and medical issues, child protection, physical restraint, pastoral care and discipline and bullying

  • To run boarders’ activities when required to do so; this also included reading to the junior children in the dormitories and helping children with spellings/revision

  • To be present for match days, assisting with first aid and match teas

  • To support the children by attending school functions/concerts where possible

  • To be flexible regarding duty timetable especially when the department is short staffed due to absence/illness

  • To attend appropriate staff meetings and staff training days

  • To attend any courses or conferences as required to assist you to carry out your duties or to enhance your skills and knowledge

  • To present a positive, confident and professional image to parents and children and support other staff in the promotion of good manners, kindness and consideration

  • To communicate with parents regarding the health and wellbeing of a child in your care, in conjunction with the Housemaster and Head Matron

  • To assist the Headmaster’s wife when required




  • To attend to the medical requirements of the children and administer non-prescriptive medication in line with the school’s medical policy

  • To ensure that when administering medication, all records are maintained neatly and up to date

  • To accompany children to the hospital, doctor or dentist when required

  • To liaise closely with the department, especially the Housemaster and Head Matron if you have any particular concerns about a child
