Assistant Gardener Job


An innovative, proactive and passionate gardener is required for a vineyard and private estate in West Sussex. The Garden Team is responsible for the maintenance and development of approx. 13 acres of the estate. This includes the formal gardens surrounding the Manor with a courtyard garden of box hedges and roses, formal lawns, lakes and woodland; a cottage garden with greenhouse, orchard and vegetable garden; and designed landscape surrounding the Vineyard’s Pressing Centre.


Responsibilities to include:


·         Responsible for the day-to-day care of plants, lawns, hedges and trees

·         To maintain all areas to a high standard of horticulture and presentation

·         Lawn care including mowing, edging, feeding, scarifying, aerating and watering, weeding

·         Use of brush cutters, hedge trimmer and other similar equipment

·         Planting and plant care as instructed by the Head Gardener, including pruning of Box and Yew Hedging           

·         To ensure particular attention is paid to the preparation of the estate for days when the CEO is in residence or for particular events, keeping disturbance to a minimum during these times

·         To keep the gardens, thoroughfares and footpaths clear and free from litter at all times

·         Maintenance of the vegetable plot cut flower garden, greenhouse, fruit cage and orchard

·         To assist with gritting, salt spreading, snow clearing, as necessary, including footpaths throughout

·         Carrying out basic maintenance on all garden equipment, ensuring it is clean and ready for use, liaising with the Estate Maintenance department as necessary who will carry out the non-day to day maintenance and taking care of breakdowns

·         To ensure all buildings you use are kept clean and tidy at all times

·         To have an awareness of pests and diseases and with appropriate training, to apply chemicals where appropriate, liaising with other staff not to interfere with other operations or events

·         Day to day maintenance of the Irrigation system and making minor repairs

·         Collecting and laying of mulches

·         Maintenance of the composting bins

·         Care of the ponds and algae control

·         To be aware of Health and Safety requirements noting that all duties must be carried out to comply with current Health & Safety at Work legislation


Working Week:         Monday-Thursday 8am-4.30pm and Friday 8am-3.30pm
