Caretaker Job North Yorkshire - salaries offered reviewed and increased

Our client is looking for an experienced Caretaker to work on an Estate in Nr Kirkham Abbey, North Yorkshire. This is a key role and the candidate will be expected to maintain the highest standards of security and cleanliness within the House, ensuring the objectives of the owners are met. The Caretaker will be expected to maintain a stress-free environment for the family when in residence and the highest standard of cleanliness and presentation to visitors.

Main duties will be:

  • Open and close the House and estate buildings ensuring the House is ready to receive visitors
  • Complete relevant utility checks as instructed by the Head Caretaker
  • Operate and monitor the fire and security alarm system in the House and adjoining buildings all-year- round, including maintenance and appropriate checks and record keeping
  • Maintain secure access to the House and adjoining buildings
  • Liaise with outdoor night-time security
  • Supervise and assist with chaperoning visitors and contractors as directed
  • Carry out a rolling programme of maintenance and general housekeeping tasks including monitoring the fabric of the building and promptly reporting any defects or repairs to the estate office
  • Assist Head Caretaker with forward planning for maintenance and activities in the building
  • Operate in accordance with the estates Health and Safety policy security procedures and ensure staff do likewise
  • Assist, advise and organise the House for events as and when required
  • Provide security and fire response presence for events as and when required
  • Respond to emergency issues relating to utility services (gas, electric, water)
  • Undertake driving/care of vehicle duties as may be required by the Estate
  • Report any defects or repairs to and ensure defects are rectified promptly. Minor repairs to be undertaken as and when necessary/possible
  • Undertake any other duties as reasonably required

Person Specification Essential Education/Qualifications/Training

  • First aid qualified Knowledge & Experience
  • Experience of being a Fire Warden
  • Basic electrical/ plumbing/ DIY skills


  • Excellent interpersonal and communication sills
  • Attention to detail and awareness of security issues
  • Flexible approach to hours worked and duties undertaken
  • Honesty and a high level of integrity
  • Practical and hands on approach
  • Ability to keep clear and effective records

Special Features

  • IOSH or Health & Safety qualification

  • Working knowledge of current legislation and regulations including electrical systems, fire safety/ firefighting equipment, gas safety, security systems and other relevant statutory regulations and bylaws

Working hours: 40 hours per week over 3.5 days per week on a rolling rota (3 x 12 hour shift & 1 x 6 hour shift)

Accommodation provided: 1 bed flat, partners considered and dogs - can also be a live out role for a local candidate although you would be required to stay over if you were covering security

Salary: £26,000 gpa live in and £28,000 gpa live out
