Couples Job Derbyshire – Housekeeper / Cook & Handyman / Gardener - £75,000 GPA +
A returning client of Greycoat Lumleys is looking for an experienced Couple to manage and maintain a large property on a mixed sporting estate. In addition, the couple will provide cooking and hosting for shoots and family visits and will work in harmony with others on the Estate to ensure that the family gets full benefit from it.
The Property is a recently-built house near Ashbourne, Derbyshire. It has eight ensuite bedrooms and was designed with entertaining in mind. It is used by the owning family as a base for enjoying what the Estate has to offer as opposed to being a permanent home. Also included in the role is care of a separate 2-bed cottage, the fishing hut and the Estate’s shoot room and offices (where an external cleaner is employed to help).
Six others are employed on the Estate: Head Keeper, Underkeeper, Fisheries & Habitat Manager, two groundworkers and a part-time gardener.
Although the family are relatively informal in nature, the roles require a couple who can run the house to a high very standard. The couple need to be familiar with modern property technology or be happy and confident to learn and deal with the appropriate contractors. The property and adjoining 2-bed cottage are not used as a main residence but should always be kept ready for use.
As different members of the family will use it at different times, the couple will need to keep a record of who likes what and how to ensure that when they arrive, everything is ready for them.
A high standard of cooking and hosting is required. A key responsibility is to cook and serve dinners and lunches for the shoot using high quality ingredients and showing a passion for flavour and creativity. Formal dinners catering for up to 16 people may be required in the house, and the couple will provide food and hosting for guns and shoot staff on approximately 12 Saturdays during the shoot season.
The kitchen is modern and well-equipped, and the owners are happy to provide the right tools to ensure the couple can fulfil their potential.
Some front of house service such as meeting and greeting guests, taking bags, etc., will also be needed. The couple should be welcoming, professional and discreet and have a bias for customer service.
The couple will do all the hands-on cleaning, laundry and ironing. There are two linen rooms and a well-equipped laundry although some laundry can be sent out if necessary. The house needs to be kept to a high standard, taking advantage of the time when it is not in use to ensure that the house is kept clean and then keeping it ticking over when the family are in residence (mainly weekends during the shoot season and other weekdays / weekends at other times of the year).
The roles require small DIY jobs to be done around the property and the other areas in the couples’ remit. Competence in e.g. hanging pictures, changing filters, and other day to day domestic maintenance is essential but professional qualifications are not required.
There is a high level of technology in the main house so a familiarity with or ability to learn about digital systems is important. Regular testing of systems is required in advance of family visits. The couple will need to maintain a daily, weekly, and monthly plan to ensure all elements of maintenance and servicing are covered. Security and fire systems must be actively managed. The ability to deal with contractors (and to ask them the right questions) is important.
The couple should maintain and regularly test the external gates, lighting, and CCTV systems as well as monitoring the physical state of the properties and bringing in contractors as necessary. A drone is available for use once training has been delivered for its safe operation.
The couple will help with the mowing of the lawns and general garden tidiness but no specific horticultural skills are required. The couple must take ownership of the standards across the site and not walk past problems that should be dealt with.
The couple will maintain and keep clean the family’s car and ATV which are kept at the house.
The couple will maintain accurate records of stock and usage so that the Family Office can recharge family members or the shoot as necessary. The couple will be responsible for the purchasing of food, drink, cleaning materials and other consumables, and for managing credit accounts with suppliers. The ability to liaise effectively with the Family Office team is critical for maintaining control and trust.
An inventory must be maintained for the house and other key areas, and stocking of general consumables at the Shoot Rooms/Estate Office on a suitable periodic basis will also be part of the role.
Working Hours - Working hours will be full-time with a mix of weekends and weekdays – more weekends in the shooting season. Details to be agreed with the couple according to what works for all parties. Time off is given in lieu of working outside contractual hours.
Driving - It is essential that the couple can both drive. A car is provided for use in conjunction with the roles.
Accommodation - Accommodation is a separate 3-bed cottage away from the main house but on the Estate in a courtyard that houses a tenanted farmhouse and the Estate Offices. The cottage was converted in 2019 and is well finished throughout. This will be rent free with utilities paid for – currently part-furnished but furnishing is flexible according to need. Pets are not usually considered.
