House Manager – Live in – Kent

 

The owner and his family are looking for a live in house manager to manage their private residence in Kent. This is a large country estate and the owner and his family do not live there during the week..

The owner is an elderly widower who has three grown up daughters and they each have their own families. They all enjoy spending weekends at the property and entertaining their guests.

It is a large country estate which includes extensive gardens and an equestrian centre.

  • There is an Estate Manager, 3 gardeners, Chef and 3 housekeepers.

  • There is an office administrator who manages the accounts, co-ordinates contractors and is the main point of contact for any events held at the estate.

Main duties:

  • Nice friendly presence in the house towards other staff, guests and the family

  • Happy to ‘muck in’ with whatever needs doing right then – a few examples could be; acting as a ‘taxi driver’ to go to the station, serving a drink, making a bed, helping with children’s tea, feeding a dog, sorting out a technical issue with televisions, or emptying the dishwasher.

  • Be senior enough and experienced enough to not have to create endless lists. The house manager will be extremely organised and have an instinct for prioritising and will make sure that nothing is overlooked.

  • Be authoritative yet calm. Have the ability to be careful and caring and brilliant with other staff when needed.

  • Take the initiative to organise a spring clean, reorganise a boot room/ children’s room/ small kitchen, sort a guest’s problem… In other words, be perceptive and have the ability to anticipate the needs and wants of the family and guests.

  • Have a good attention to detail.

  • Enjoy having children around the property. There will be 5 grandchildren under the age of 5 and there are often many children there at weekends.

  • Be willing and able to serve at table 

  • Be a very clear communicator. Short and to the point. Only asking for things he/she really wants or needs. Otherwise sorting problems by themselves. “Someone that brings solutions not problems”. 

KEY RESPONSISIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS WOULD INCLUDE:

  • It will be essential that the house manager works at weekends. The family and guests will usually be at the property from Friday lunchtime through until Sunday afternoon. The house manager will be expected to work ‘long days’ on Fridays and Saturdays, ensuring that they are also there in the evenings. During the week, when there is no-one staying at the property, hours can be more flexible. The house manager will have 2 full days off during the week. Generally, the house manager will be expected to work over bank holidays and Christmas as these are times when the house will be full of guests.

  • The house manager will be expected to co-ordinate the sleeping, eating and travel arrangements (to and from the station) for all of the guests. The family use ‘Google sheets’ to inform everyone of guests staying at the castle.

  • They will be in charge of managing the other housekeeping staff.

  • The house manager will not manage, but will have a very close working relationship with the chef. They will act as overall co-ordinator for the house and all of the events, activities and requirements involved.

  • They will hold weekly meetings with other staff members to make sure that everyone is working together as a team to make sure that the house runs smoothly.

  • They will be conscious of budgets and expenditure and be expected to keep good financial records to make sure that things operate as economically as possible. The office administrator manages the castle accounts.

  • Good working knowledge of key computer software packages such as word and excel. Xero accounting software is used at the castle.

  • If a prospective candidate wanted to bring their dog with them, for example, this would be considered.

  • A clean driving license is essential
