Live-In Couple, Suffolk
The principals are a working couple with no children; they both work from home part of the time, but when they attend work she is based in Cambridge and he in London. They have an additional residence in London where they regularly (but not always) spend 1-3 nights a week.
The role would entail a mix of driving, garden and house maintenance, supervising contractors, and other tasks including basic DIY, decoration, errands, etc. At least one of the employed couple would be expected to be at the main residence to be available to accept deliveries, and to supervise contractors as needed, during working hours. Hours are likely to be variable, with some early mornings and / or late evenings, plus some weekends, with time off in lieu where possible, or if not then paid overtime. Given the importance of having a two drivers available (as neither of the couple drive themselves), it is expected that wherever possible the employees will align their holiday with that of the principals, and they should not expect to take holiday during academic term time. There is typically less driving required during the summer season which aligns with a greater amount of time needed maintaining the garden.
The principals have a long term rental of a one-bedroom property in the village to be used by the couple. There is also a dedicated small insulated staff garden room that can be used during the day to shelter from inclement weather and for lunch breaks etc. The employees would be expected to work alongside the principals to ensure that any emergencies at the property are taken care of.
The employees will drive the clients in cars that are garaged at their house. The majority of driving will be a mix of commutes into central Cambridge and central London, plus social and other engagements. The employees will be expected to oversee maintenance of the cars, not limited to arranging services and repairs, cleaning, etc. Whilst both employees will be expected to be able and willing to drive the principals, particularly where conflicting schedules mean that they both need to travel to different destinations at the same time, it is acceptable if one of the couple focuses on the majority of the driving and longer journeys and the other on shorter and less frequent journeys.
The garden is approximately 2 acres, consisting predominantly of lawn (to be mowed weekly in growing season with a provided ride on lawnmower), plus a series of large flower beds, a rose garden, and a number of fruit trees, all of which will require careful maintenance and watering, with additional planting as requested. There is an ongoing programme of improvement to the garden, including fencing/hedging and the addition of flower beds and other garden features, which the employees will be expected to continue to work on as directed by the principals.
The employee will be expected to supervise contractors as required, plus carry out basic repairs and maintenance as requested. This may include (paint) redecoration of selected rooms of the house in weeks when the principals are away and/or other indoor tasks when the weather is too poor to work outside.
There will be regular laundry to wash, dry and iron, which will generally be expected to be carried out (in working hours) at the employees’ provided accommodation and not of that of the principals. On occasion, the employee may be asked to run various errands for the principals, such as shopping, dropping off and collecting dry cleaning, etc.
