Head Gardener - Jersey 

A fabulous opportunity for an experienced Head Gardener to work on a private estate in Jersey which is the Principals main residence. 

13 acres of formal gardens, woodlands and ponds which are planned to undergo an extensive redesign with plenty of scope for the head gardener appointed to add his/her love for horticulture and knowledge into bringing this garden back to it's best.

The Principals require a highly self-motivated person with good horticultural knowledge who is capable of leading a small team as well as collaborate with the Landscape Designer to create and maintain this top-end garden. This is a hands-on role and requires good leadership skills and strong horticulture and plant knowledge.

Skills required

  • Excellent horticultural knowledge
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems and water features
  • Ability to deal with their employer professionally and diplomatically
  • Ability to act pro-actively in ensuring all gardens stay well maintained

Experience

  • 12-15 years’ experience working in large gardens
  • Proven maintenance record working in high quality gardens
  • Proven soft landscaping record
  • Previous experience managing a team

Main duties

  • Management and upkeep of the 13-acre garden, woods and ponds
  • Overseeing and carrying out general garden maintenance, including mowing, hedge cutting, weeding, pruning and mulching
  • Careful monitoring of watering and irrigation systems
  • Preparing areas ready for planting
  • Receiving and placing plant stock
  • Tree and shrub planting
  • Propagation and encouraging the development of new plants in existing greenhouse
  • Preparation, planting and maintenance of the kitchen garden and perennial and shrub borders

Generally

  • Manage as a good team leader all other gardeners, (4) to include managing schedules, giving tasks, training where needed and keeping up team moral
  • Carry out hands on gardening duties
  • Keeping a garden diary and accurate records of daily works and corresponding costs
  • Following set procedures on health and safety, working practices and reporting all issues to do with the well-being of the client's gardens
  • Assist the principals in planning and setting up for events and parties
  • Organise contractors and deliveries
  • Happy to look after the Principals dogs and cat  and chickens when they are away 
  • Security of the estate 
  • The Head Gardener will be directly responsible to the owners/ principals.

Candidate requirements

  • Strong horticulture and plant knowledge plus relevant qualifications
  • Previous experience managing a team
  • Self motivated
  • Good team player and happy to get hands dirty
  • Looking for a long-term role
  • Good command of English language
  • Driver is required

Accommodation

The accommodation is a large 1 bedroom separate self-contained accommodation within the grounds, which is all brand new - it has it's own private garden.

A partner and pet will be considered, but unfortunately children cannot be accommodated.
