Greycoat Lumleys are looking for a Residential Matron for a Boys Boarding School in Shropshire to start in September 2019.



This is a brilliant position for someone who already has experience of working as Matron in a busy boarding house and understands the nature of the job and the joys it can bring.


The main responsibility of the Matron will be to support the Housemaster by ensuring the welfare and wellbeing of all boys and the smooth running of the house. The Matron must be understanding and have sympathy with the boys, be of a friendly disposition with the need to maintain discipline.


Duties and Responsibilities


  • The Matron is responsible, together with the Housemaster for helping boys settle into Boarding House life by providing a sympathetic ear and providing pastoral support

  • Providing a listening ear and friendship to the boys in the House; the quality of this relationship is important when dealing with the tricky personal and social issues that can arise

  • To ensure that any maintenance requirements are reported to the Housemaster in order to maintain a safe environment

  • The Matron will liaise with parents, teachers, house masters, tutors and other employees

  • Oversight of dorms and any students in them to include awareness of any medical or pastoral care plans

  • The Matron is responsible for ensuring that the boys gets proper medical treatment due to illness or injury, and for the boy’s parents to be informed accordingly. The Matron must also inform the Housemaster of such incident and of any concerns about the well-being or treatment of the boys

  • Overseeing the general tidiness of the House and the boys

  • Administrational duties

  • Responsible, with the Housemaster, for making sure that all boys rise at the proper time in the morning, and attend meals

  • Checking changing rooms and liaising with Lost Property representative

  • Together with Housemaster, supervising packing and tidying at the end of term.


We are looking for someone who has childcare experience (ideally in a school/educational setting). Someone with a current DBS certificate.


Start: September 2019

Salary: £18,500 - £22,680 depending on experience

Accommodation: 2 bed flat with large lounge and kitchen and bathroom (spouse/partner more than welcome)

Hours of Work: Matron’s normal working hours during term-time are 7.30am to 9.45am, 12.45pm to 6pm and 9pm to 10.30pm. Matron is entitled to one free day per week by arrangement with the Housemaster
