This School, is one of the leading co-educational boarding Schools in the north of England. They are seeking an enthusiastic and hardworking Senior Grounds Person to join the Grounds Staff team. The Grounds Staff team of the School provide pupils, staff and visitors to the School with sports and amenity facilities commensurate with the School’s long standing position as a leading Independent School and major sporting institution.

The successful candidate will have experience of Grounds Maintenance and preparing high quality sports turf. Main Purpose The ground staff team of Sedbergh School provide pupils, staff and visitors to the school with sports and amenity facilities commensurate with the school’s long-standing position as a leading Independent School and major sporting institution. To ensure that all work undertaken is completed with due regard for timescales, cost, quality, productivity, good communications and in line with health and safety requirements.

Reporting The Senior Grounds Person will form part of the ground staff team under the direction of the Grounds Manager. Ultimate responsibility will be to the Operations Bursar. All staff are expected to work across two school sites as directed by the Grounds Manager, Facilities Manager or Operations Bursar.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • All aspects of grass pitch maintenance and preparation including but not limited to gang mowing, pitch marking, sand spreading, wicket preparation, rolling.
  • Preparation and maintenance of cricket wickets.
  • Maintenance works to the all-weather playing surfaces.
  • General sports facility care and preparation including hard surface tennis and netball courts and athletics facilities;
  • Estate work including hedging, fencing, and other general duties estate work as required.
  • The use and maintenance of hand tools and basic light machinery and plant. • The use of cylinder and rotary mowers, strimmer’s, leaf blowers.
  • To respond to emergencies and assist other departments i.e. cricket, rugby, tree work etc. as directed by the Grounds Manager, Head Gardener, or Facilities Manager  
  • Driving tractors and other associated vehicles with trailers.

Other Duties:

  • To assist the Clerk of Works with delegated work as required.
  • To use school IT systems including the Maintenance Helpdesk to manage jobs.
  • To assist colleagues as necessary during busy periods.
  • Attend relevant staff meetings, other meetings, and training and development as required by the post.
  • Contribute to the ethos of the school.
  • To be aware of Health and Safety requirements noting that all duties must be carried out to comply with current Health & Safety at Work legislation.
  • Ensure the safe storage and monitoring of any COSHH items

You:

  • A minimum of three years relevant work experience, completion of a suitable qualification or apprenticeship.
  • PA1, PA6 spraying certificates.
  • Full, clean UK driving licence
  • A clear understanding of health and safety management, including risk assessments to ensure all activities are carried out in a safe way as well as current Health and Safety legislation, especially in relation to the safe use, storage, calibration and disposal of pesticides and other similar substances.
  • Experience preparing high quality cricket pitches.
  • Experience of Grounds Maintenance.
  • Physically fit to stand, bend, lift and carry goods in accordance with the manual handling requirements of the role
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

Hours: 40 hours per week
